The great escape

At least, that’s what Arcadia is planning when we place her in the swing.  If we didn’t strap her in, I’m sure she’d figure out a way out!

Arcadia update

Since Tysen and I have both returned to work full time, keeping everyone updated on Arcadia is becoming more difficult.  Last week (March 16 – 20) Arcadia’s G’ma took care of her since she hadn’t gotten into day care yet.  (Thanks Sara!  We really appreciated you visiting and taking care of Arcadia for the week!)  And, fortunately for us, last week we learned that Arcadia was accepted at day care and could start on Monday, March 23rd, which was perfect.  So, for the update, here are some photos that were taken of Arcadia, mostly by Sara with Tysen’s camera and new macro lens. (Click to enlarge.)

On Sara’s last day with us, we pulled out the rice cereal and gave Arcadia a chance to try to eat with a spoon.  At her 4-month check-up, the pediatrician indicated we could start Arcadia on solid foods (rice cereal) if we were so inclined since she had doubled her birth weight.  I was hesitant at first, since the American Pediatrics Association says you should wait until 6 months, but others indicate that once your baby has doubled its birth weight, eats 8 to 10 times per day, and seems interested in what you are eating, its safe to start.  Well, Arcadia has done two out of the three (she only eats 6 – 7 times per day), and we went for it anyway.  Arcadia seemed to have lots of fun playing with her food.  I’m not so sure she really ate anything (which I know she’s not really going to until she gets the hang of it), but she sure enjoyed helping shove the spoon in her mouth.  Check out some of the photos above of her first foray into solid food.  We’ve tried the cereal again a couple of times to help get her used to it, but again, most of it ends up all over her face, hands, and high chair.

As I indicated above, this week Arcadia started day care.  Its been a bit of an adjustment, and her first day was a little rough (she refused her first and second bottles so day care called me and I went and picked her up early) but hasn’t had any trouble since.  She did cry a bit on her second and third days when we transferred her to a day care employee, but she was quickly distracted with a toy and stopped crying both days.  Today, she didn’t fuss a bit when we dropped her off.  So things are going well.  Hopefully since we are at the end of flu season, we won’t have to deal with any baby sickness for a while.

Music to get excited about…

welcome-to-mali_1

Today on my way home from work I was listening to NPR and they did a music review on the new CD out by Amadou & Miriam, Welcome to Mali.  We first heard about Amadou & Miriam during a previous music review on NPR back in 2005 or 2006, when they discussed their CD Dimanche a Bamako.  After listening to the music clips and hearing the story about the artists, we bought the first CD.  Then, maybe a year ago or so, while browsing the music selection at Best Buy, we purchased a second CD of theirs, Je Pense a Toi: The Best of Amadou & Miriam.  I’ve throughly enjoyed the 2 CDs we’ve purchased, so when NPR introduced me to their newest CD today, I made a mental note to myself to add the CD to my Amazon wishlist.   A transcript of the CD review and audio (available after 7pm EST) are available on NPR’s website.

Healthy Chocolate Cake?

Is there such a thing? For Tysen’s birthday I made him a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting using a recipe from Vegetarian Times magazine.  The recipe, found here, replaces an egg and much of the oil needed in a cake recipe with an avocado.  Plus, the frosting has tofu in it, meaning you get some protein with your cake.  The recipe makes 12 cupcakes, but I instead just made a one-layer cake using a 10″x2″ hexagon shaped pan then topped it with the frosting.  The recipe made a very nice dense yet moist cake that we didn’t even wait to take pictures of it, we just devoured it.  I’d definitely recommend making this for any occasion.  Next time we might even substitute whole-wheat flour for some of the all-purpose flour to make it even healthier!

Arcadia Does Indeed Have Serebin Genes

So what does this mean?!?!?!

She found her feet!

I’ve been meaning to post this story/picture for a while now, but since I started back to work full time on Monday, I just haven’t had the time.  So recently, Arcadia has been fascinated with her feet.  It’s like she finally realized she had them and that they were hers.  Now, she grabs them all the time, and like toys and her clothing, shoves them in her mouth.  By grabbing her feet and pulling them to her face, she also helps relieve her gas.  It’s pretty darn cute!

Dice Brownies

I made these for a game party at our house on Saturday.  I had been toying around with the idea for a month or so now, and was thinking about doing it for Tysen’s birthday, but when buying ice cream cupcakes from Maggie Moo’s didn’t work out, I decided to modify my dice idea and use a box of brownie mix and tub of vanilla icing that I had previously purchased.  To construct these dice brownies, I baked the brownie mix in a 13×9 pan.  Once cooled, the brownies were about 1″ tall, so I placed toothpicks at every 2″ to make 2″ square brownines.  Then, I stacked two brownies together, with a layer of icing in between.  The stacked brownies were then covered with icing and store-bought green and black icing gel was used to create the pips.  Another option for the pips is to use chocolate chips, with the pointed end inserted into the icing.  I’d probably use those next time so my pips wouldn’t sag.  I also might try out using fondant icing next time to get a smooth dice.  They were fun to make and definitely yummy to eat!
