I Need to Get a Macro Lens

I would like to get a macro lens (as does Tysen). I love taking pictures of insects (since I don’t have any cute kids to take photographs of). My Sony point-and-shoot does a nice job, as evidenced here, but a macro for my Nikon would be better. These dragonflies magically appeared one day and were around the garden for about two days then disappeared. Where they went I have no idea, but they were quite beaudragonflytiful when they were here.

Data Mining

deaver-the-broken-windowA few weeks ago I finished the latest Jeffery Deaver novel, The Broken Window.  Jeffery Deaver writes murder mystery fiction and I really enjoy his Lincoln Rhyme series.  Rhyme is a quadrapelegic who spent his early years (pre-disability) categorizing trace evidence.  Now, he works out of his town home and helps catch criminals using trace evidence.  In this novel Rhyme is trying to catch a criminal who is using data mining software to learn both about his victims and the persons he frames for the crimes.  There is a lot of information in the book about the data mining company and the types of data collected on everyone.  Its scary to think all that information is out there, from the shoes you buy, the places you eat and shop, people you associate with, etc.  The book really highlights the pros and cons of collecting this type of information on everyone.  Definintely makes you think!

I recommend reading Jeffery Deaver if you are into CSI type programs.  My only problem with reading Deaver is that it takes me a while to get into his books.  Its mainly because he does a really good job of introducing the characters and setting the scene early in his books.  This pushes the action of the novel further into the book.  But, I promise if you stick with it, you’ll enjoy it.  I always try to figure out whodonit, and the story keeps you guessing until the end.

Snow Day!

We’ve been a full house with visitors the past two weekends.  Last weekend my sister Kaley came to visit.  She hadn’t been to DC since childhood, so we did some walking around DC and visited museums.  This weekend, my grandmother came to visit.  I think she said she hadn’t been to DC in like 40 years.  So, we did a driving tour past several of the monuments and museums.  Arcadia is my grandmother’s second great-grandchild, so it was exciting for her to meet Arcadia.

Last night, Arcadia’s high chair was built.  While we probably won’t start her on solid food for a few more months now, she isn’t a fan of sitting in her bouncy chair when we eat dinner because she is so close to the floor.  Since she does pretty well sitting up, now she can join us at the table while we eat, and hopefully we won’t have to hold her and eat one-handed.

And, most exciting of all, we got snow!  Lots of snow.  Enough snow for my office to close.  I’m sure the snow plows are super busy…they haven’t gotten into our neighborhood yet.  News reports indicate accumulation of 3 – 6 inches, but I think we’ve already gotten 6 inches.  Plus, the storm isn’t over.  The warning is in effect until 2pm.  It’s not really snowing now, but the flurries keep coming every so often.  Of course, since it snowed again, I had to take Arcadia out for her second snow adventure.  Check out the photos for how deep it was on her.  She just sunk right in!

We know you've wanted to hear this!

What Do Pelicans Do When its Going to Rain?

Since I’ve moved to Florida and watched the pelicans glide across the water so gracefully, I’ve decided I wanted to be a pelican in my next life. Now after spending time on my medicine walk, I may change that to a hawk (but more on that in another blog post). Here’s a pelican I watch from a boat in Clearwater Bay and she hunkered down and  prepared herself for some drizzle. Notice she continued to watch us closely with her facing eye.pelican-huddles
